Country Hotels in Suffolk
Country Hotels in SuffolkNeed a break from the city? Looking for a chance to get away from the stresses of everyday life? Country Hotels in Suffolk offer a refreshing hideaway in some of the most scenic countryside in England, but still within easy travelling distance of London and the South East. In Suffolk you'll find country pursuits - walking, cycling, horse riding, hunting, shooting and fishing - galore, as well as local fetes and festivals, and charming village shops that disappeared many years ago from busy town centres. So set out for adventure and enjoy nature with these excellent countryside retreats.
In Bury St Edmunds, The Ickworth Hotel (below) was once home to the Hervey family, and is surrounded by 1800 acres of glorious English Parkland. Ickworth is a successful blend of contemporary style with the traditions of a great country house to benefit all the family. The lavish décor does not hark back to days long gone, but has been given a contemporary feel to the ground floor and some bedrooms which maintain respect for traditions of this great house.
The hotel has 27 bedrooms and you can choose to “Lord it Up” in the Marquis’s bed chamber or snuggle up in the Butler’s cosy retreat. The additional 11 apartments in the Dower House, a short distance from the main hotel, offer families spacious accommodation within its own four acres of gardens (click on their disp;ay above for more details).
Also in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk Hotel, Golf, and Leisure offers stunning countryside views, and a full 18-hole Championship Golf course.
Part of the Suffolk Heritage coast, The Crown and Castle (above) in Orford dates back to the 16th century. The Hotel is run by the legendary Hotel Inspector, Ruth Watson and her husband, and, as you'd expect, the standard is top class. The Crown and Castle has 18 light, stylish bedrooms all with modern en-suite bathrooms. Although extremely quietly positioned, it is not a country house hotel in the hackneyed, ruched-curtain, prohibitively expensive sense. Neither is it efficient but soulless, in the way modern, city-centre hotels can be.
Ruth and David Watson have set out to create a new concept in hospitality, offering a genial atmosphere, good food and well-designed, simple bedrooms at modest cost. Try it and See! There are lots of things to do and places to see nearbly including - Orford Castle, and Orford Ness.
Also in Orford and also run by the Watsons is The Kings Head Inn which is a Pub with Rooms, but if you can't squeeze into The Crown and Castle this is a very attractive alternative.

It was a private house (lived in by Stephen Spender in the 1930's) until Regis and Martine Crepy turned it into a ‘Boutique’ hotel with restaurant in 1985. The food (predominantly French) is the best for miles -'stunningly good' enthuses one visitor (a fellow hotelier).
The five bedrooms, each with its ensuite bathroom and four with seating or a separate lounge are light and elegant still retaining the wonderful charm of the house. A multitude of hidden delights include a mini-bar, espresso machines, plasma screen television, wifi, hifi, hairdryers and ironing boards and the complimentary fruit and decanter of sherry offer a welcoming touch.
The generous beds, including the majestic king size Jacobean four poster, are dressed in fine Egyptian linen, a luxurious eiderdown and plump continental pillows.
In summer French doors open onto a pretty stone-paved courtyard for drinks, lunch or dinner.
